Binyelum is a Ndi Igbo girl living in what was once northeastern Nigeria, in the years after the Big Dry kicked off the final Kashmir War and took the rest of the world with it. The planet no longer belongs to humanity, whose remnants are scattered and left to scrabble for survival in a world overcome by war, climate change, and a new breed of creature–the scorpion children. Huge, arachnoid beasts plated in armor, with claws and stinging tails, the scorpion children have pushed humankind to the brink of extinction.
In her small village, Binyelum keeps alive the last remnant of old human technology, a battered laptop powered by an aging solar cell. She uses the computer to search lost repositories of human knowledge, looking for tidbits to help keep her people alive. She never dreamed that someday someone would reach out through that ancient technology and contact her. But that’s what happened. A message blinks on her screen, waiting for her to respond.
Her future, and perhaps what is left of humanity’s, hang in the balance.
