Dazzler By Eric S Brown

One of the most bizarre superhero concepts Marvel came up with during the 1970s was certainly the Dazzler. Alison Blaire, in fact, didn’t even want to be a superhero. Her dream was to be a famous singer in the dying days of disco. Alison was born a mutant with the ability to absorb sound and redirect it as light. Sounds like a sort of crappy power but as it turns out, that’s not the case at all. The Dazzler could use her mutant ability in a wide variety of ways from blinding her enemies, shooting lasers from her eyes and hands, and so many others.

Marvel went all in on making the Dazzler a hit, throwing seemingly countless guest stars into her title. Everyone from the Angel and the X-Men to Spider-Woman and the Hulk to even the mighty Galactus appeared in her comic. Despite Marvel’s efforts however the Dazzler title ran for less than four years ending on its forty second issue. Her story didn’t end there though. The Dazzler went on to become a member of the X-Men and remains a semi-active part of the Marvel Comics universe even today.

The Dazzler is a cult classic series that somehow stands the test of time in-spite of its obviously dated stories. The series is an enjoyable read for all ages of comic fans and is an often overlooked piece of Marvel history.
