from Dark Watcher: Cryptid Critter Poems by Richard Stevenson

octo-squatch
has eight furry legs
and a furry head
the Basque mountain roads get cold
best wear a Squatch Skin coat.

*

Tahoe Tessie’s
on a tear!  Took off
with Mawsie’s underwear!

*

the Lake Van Monster –
kin to the Mosasaurus –
snagged a human once
too gamey or maybe he
gave him indigestion.

*

daughter’s got
a plastic six-pack
tiara, baby!
ain’t she becoming when
her gills don’t get caught?

*

the Lake of the Woods’
own cryptid critter  Woodsie
is kinda circumspect
doesn’t do a lot of stunts,
no selfie-with-serpent shots

*

the Will-of-the-Wisp –
your strange aerial orbs –
don’t stop for Gorbies wearin’
fluorescent gear; they prefer
to stay above the fray

*

the Rake’s not just
some yard or farm implement
he’s a monster you
won’t catch raking leaves
raking backs with claws maybe …

*

Kusshi ain’t Nessie
despite the big ad campaign
cute Japanese name
he prefers the coiled hose pose
to neck stretch and tumbleturns

*

Orang Mawas
has got rank hot magma gas
quick!  pass her a match!
