It is what Brian the Dolphin feels,
when he knows that he will never swim
with Dave from Accounts or Sandra
from the typing pool.
What the 40 something feels
approaching the table of women
in their twenties, knowing he will
become the next anecdote.
When the seventy five year old says
music or films aren’t like they used to be,
and then realises, that not everything from
the sixties was brilliant.
It is what the left and right wings argue about
on social media, knowing that they will never
solve the problems like that.
What the last paper-clip in the box feels.
It is what happens to the staple,
going in at the wrong angle.
The sound given to white noise,
poised between Radio three or Four.
The feeling you get thinking,
what am I writing this for.
