Song of the Woods by Gergana Arshinkova

A yellow moon crowns over the dark path.
Twisted branches reflect its light.
Darkness sways on the sides
and begs for you to step aside.
Clawed fingers and pearly teeth,
furry tails and pointy ears
await and call you in the dark
so be careful not to walk into their trap.
But fret not, dear child,
as long as you stay on the path
and survive the cold of the night,
you’ll get where you need,
you might be safe
and will find a warm place to sleep.

Despite the shivers and your droopy eyes,
you must continue, O brave child!
Put one foot ahead the other,
and straighten up your spine,
because a treat awaits you
at the end of the line.

Forget your problems and your angry mom,
forget your mean dad
and the hunger that eats you whole.
Ignore the crunch of the dead leaves
and the howling of the beasts.
Overlook the cold’s icy fingers
and the sleep that’s tugging at your tired feet.
Only listen to my voice,
it will lead you exactly where you need to be.

When you reach the end of the path
you will be presented with a choice
and there will be no turning back.
You can either turn around
and trace your steps to your cold
and lonely house.
Or you can step into the darkness
and reach my open arms.

I will take you to your new home,
that is fully made
of sweets and chocolate
and its roof is an ice cream cone.
Come, my sweet child,
come and don’t think twice.
If you come to me now
you will never feel hunger again.
You will never have to worry
about the world outside my den.
