The New Mutants Omnibus Vol. 1 by Eric S Brown

Chris Claremont is regarded by some as one of Marvel’s finest writers. When one hears his name mentioned, they usually think of his work on the X-Men. That said, Claremont wrote a lot more than just the Uncanny X-Men. He brought the world the New Mutants. The team first appeared in 1982 in the pages of a self titled graphic novel. It sold well enough to warrant an ongoing series with Claremont at the helm. Claremont originally didn’t want to write the title but ended up doing it anyway. The series became a hit with its original run lasting nearly a decade before finally coming to an end. This first omnibus collects the graphic novel featuring the team’s first appearance as well as the first 34 issues of the series that it gave birth too in addition to numerous tie in issues and mini-series such as Magik 1-4 and several issues of the X-Men.

This omnibus is a must for any fan of Marvel in the 80’s. The New Mutants captures everything that was great about comics during that time. There’s not only lots of superhero action but an emotional connection to the team’s members as they “grow up” towards not only adulthood but perhaps becoming X-Men themselves one day.

This original team consisted for Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Karma though the likes of Magma, Cypher, Warlock, and of course Magik are quickly added to its ranks. The series really begins to hit its stride once Magik joins the team and this omnibus collects all of “feeling” and fun that those who read the actual issues back in the early 80’s got to experience. It’s a must have for fans of mutants in the Marvel Universe.
