Everyone remembers comic books in the nineties, right? Bad girls, bad writing, over the top art, market chaos, lackluster writing, and even Marvel declaring chapter 11 bankruptcy defined the decade. Still, that didn’t mean everything released in the nineties was trash.
Thor: Heroes Return Omnibus collects the first 35 issues of the character’s relaunched title as well as several tie-in issues from other titles like Spider-Man and Iron Man. The massive, hardcover tome contains a whopping 1232 pages of material.
Yes, the art has its up and downs. Yes, the storylines aren’t up to par with Thor’s older adventures. Those things said however, the omnibus does not disappoint. It is saved by a constant slew of guest appearances including the likes of Namor, Hercules, Dr. Doom, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Juggernaut, The Silver Surfer, and more making it a fun read despite its quality flaws.
During this time, Thor also assumes a new mortal identity, finding himself engaged to a woman he doesn’t know at all. Thor is now honorbound to live the life of the mortal he has replaced while wishing to be free of that life. This switch serves as an interesting subplot which runs throughout much of the omnibus.
