The Winter Hunger by Eric S Brown

*Beware of spoilers in the following review.*

There are tons of fabulous foreign horror movies these days. The Winter Hunger trailer certainly makes it worthy to be counted among them. Unfortunately, the movie fails to live up to its potential. It focuses on a group of survivors fleeing a large city in the wake of a zombie-like rabies outbreak. They encounter two other groups of survivors who are at war with one another despite their small numbers, both groups consisting of less than four people. The original group is taken by those living in the town itself while the third group resides a bit farther away.

The zombie effects are great and the acting is not lacking in The Winter Hunger. Still, the movie leaves the viewer disappointed if they’re a zombie film fan. The Winter Hunger uses just about every trope of the genre. The group that takes in those fleeing the city turn out to be cannibals, we get the trope of two groups fighting each other amid the chaos, we have a character who has locked away an infected love one, and even an ending that’s nothing but a straight up copy of Night of the Living Dead.

Is The Winter Hunger worth watching? Yes, if you’re a person who must see every zombie film released but perhaps not if you’re just a causal viewer looking for some carnage and end of the world flavor.
